A ketubah is a legal contract given to the bride during the wedding ceremony. Its original purpose was to guard the rights of the woman. In the Ketuba the husband obligates himself to support and respect is wife. Additionally, the Ketuba lists the possessions the wife brings into the marriage, and the amount of severance the husband will be required to pay, if it becomes applicable.
